What’s All the Fuss About? Why Validation Matters More Than You Think

This episode provides a clear introduction to the principles and practice of validation and verification in forensic science.

Designed to build foundational knowledge, it outlines the scientific, legal and ethical importance of validation, and how it supports accreditation and the admissibility of evidence.

Drawing on the ANZPAA NIFS Guideline for the Validation of Forensic Science Methods, the session explores key concepts including validation, verification and optimisation testing, the six stages of validation across a method’s lifecycle, and the roles and responsibilities involved. It also highlights the impact of human factors and bias, and the importance of literature reviews and stakeholder engagement in shaping effective validation strategies.
