ANZPAA Religious and Spiritual Diversity Guide for Operational Police (Guide)

Posted: 12 May 2022

We are pleased to announce the release of the fourth edition of the Religious and Spiritual Diversity Guide for Operational Police (Guide).

The Guide aims to provide police with a greater understanding of religious and spiritual diversity and seeks to enhance police services to religious and spiritually diverse communities. The updated Guide provides an overview of nine commonly practised religions and spiritualties and information directly relevant to operational policing in diverse communities such as considerations for:

  • contact and interviewing
  • searches and detention
  • death, bereavement and mourning

A key driver of the review of the Guide was the need to ensure the content reflects current demography, including contemporary understandings of diversity and inclusion. In line with this, the content of Guide has been re-drafted to better reflect the distinction between spirituality and religious practice; and to promote understanding of the complexity and diversity of faith, belief and spirituality. For the first time, the Guide is available in an electronic format (interactive PDF) to support police with ready access to information on the frontline. The Guide can be accessed via the ANZPAA website and downloaded to phones and tablets. The Guide represents a true collaboration between police jurisdictions and representatives from religious organisations, peak bodies and community groups, and we thank all those who contributed valuable advice and support.
