The increased exchange of forensic evidence and information between states and nations highlights the role of common standards for forensic service providers in order to avoid uncertainty regarding the way in which an item has been handled, the methods that have been used, and how the results have been interpreted. The use of standards ensures the continuing reliability and quality of forensic science at an international level. The development of forensic standards ensures the continued confidence of investigators and the courts.
