Rapid DNA is a relatively new technology, implemented in certain limited scenarios overseas but not yet deployed in Australia or New Zealand. Rapid DNA describes the fully automated process (all analytic steps are without human intervention) of developing a DNA profile from a sample within one instrument. The instruments are relatively small and mobile, can be operated by a layperson and provide results in approximately 60-90 minutes.
The Rapid DNA project is a multi-agency venture examining the technical, operational, policy and legislative aspects of Rapid DNA technology. ANZPAA NIFS has provided facilitation, policy and legislative assessment, quality assurance of data and assistance in development of a final report – The Evaluation of Commercially Available Rapid DNA Instruments in the Australian Context.
