Australasian Forensic Field Sciences Accreditation Board (AFFSAB) Review Implementation Project – Update December 2018

The Australasian Forensic Field Sciences Accreditation Board (AFFSAB) Review Implementation Project commenced in June 2017 to facilitate the implementation of recommendations that were developed as part of a major review of AFFSAB between June 2016 and March 2017 (AFFSAB Future Directions Project). The purpose of the review was to better align AFFSAB to the requirements as set out in ISO 17024:2012 Conformity Assessment-General Requirements for bodies operating certifications of persons.  In late 2018, AFFSAB was renamed the Australasian Forensic Science Assessment Body (AFSAB) to better reflect that it is an independent body which certifies individuals to an agreed professional standard.

The development of a new assessment process for all three disciplines (Fingerprints, Crime Scene and Firearms) is currently in progress. The new process aims to streamline and standardise assessments across the disciplines, where appropriate. A slight shift to current demonstrable expertise, including the addition of contemporary issues questions, is envisaged. It is anticipated that the new assessment process will go live on 1 July 2019. Further information will be provided as it becomes available through the AFSAB communication pathways.

ReminderAll applications for annual and five-yearly recertifications are due as of 1 January 2023
