New mobile website means the Force is with you while you're on-the-go
3/01/2012 9:47:16 AMSmart phone and tablet users will have greater access to the latest crime news, traffic alerts and emergency warnings with NSW Police Force unveiling its new mobile website.
NSW Police Force is already a world leader in harnessing new digital technology to help prevent and solve crime, with its facebook, twitter, YouTube and Flickr sites receiving millions of hits – as well as the world-first Eyewatch project.
However, the Force is today taking the next step towards servicing the proliferation of smart phones and tablets by launching: m.police.nsw.gov.au
The number of visits to the Force’s website from a mobile device more than tripled to 67,713-a-month in the year to August 2011.
Smart phone and tablet users currently account for 22% of all visits to the NSWPF website; however, up until now, mobile visitors have had to view the ‘full’ version – which is optimised for desktop and laptop viewing.
The new mobile version of the website condenses the most popular sections into a small number of easy-to-navigate pages, including:
- Contact Police: ‘Click to Call’ access to Triple Zero (000), the Police Assistance Line and Crime Stoppers, as well as information on when to call each;
- Find a Police Station: A map search function to locate the nearest police station;
- News: The latest NSW Police Force media releases formatted in a mobile-friendly and easy-to-read layout;
- Recruitment: Important police recruitment information;
- Other Police Sites: Easy access to NSWPF facebook, twitter and YouTube sites, plus a link to the ‘full’ version of the NSWPF website; and
- Police Videos: Link to the NSWPF YouTube channel showing the latest police videos.
NSW Police Force Commissioner, Andrew Scipione APM – who will today unveil plans for a series of special events to celebrate the Force’s 150th anniversary in 2012 – said the new mobile website is another example of how the organisation is moving with the times and embracing new technology to reach out to the community it serves.
“Tens of thousands people access our website every month – almost one-in-four use a smart phone, such as an iPhone or Android, or a tablet device, like an iPad, to do so” Commissioner Scipione said.
“On top of that, more and more people are relying on smart phones and tablet devices instead of PCs and laptops to access the internet – so we are definitely moving with the times by launching this mobile website.
“Launching this mobile website is a relatively simple initiative that will dramatically enhance access to policing information. The Force will literally be with you no matter where you are,” he said.
The mobile website can be viewed on smart phone or tablet by navigating to: m.police.nsw.gov.au
